We are making progress. West Ada initially defended the removal of Inama’s posters by citing Policy 401.2. The board is planning to remove that policy and replace it with policy 403.50.
What’s most significant is the new review process outlined in the accompanying Administrative Regulations (ARs). This process was developed collaboratively by teachers and administrators and introduces key protections:
- If a complaint is made by a West Ada patron or stakeholder, the item will be reviewed first at the building level to determine if it meets the “content neutral” standard.
- If the issue cannot be resolved at the building level, the matter will go to a district-level committee.
The language around this committee review was crafted with great care, and there are multiple safeguards in place to prevent extreme interpretations that could wrongly target inclusive or supportive messages like Inama’s.
This new policy does not erase the harm that was done—but it is a major step forward. It reflects real progress toward protecting our students from discrimination and bias in the future.
We encourage West Ada patrons to continue reaching out to the board—especially in writing via this link (must then click on “Public Comments”). You might consider:
- Thanking them for placing this policy on the agenda.
- Acknowledging the positive direction of the new policy and review process (or expressing your specific concerns).
- Offering suggestions to improve the language of the review process.
- Sharing your personal experience with the previous policy and how it affected you or your students.
- Requesting an acknowledgement by the board that the situation was handled poorly.
We encourage other supporters to spread the word about this newsletter as we continue the work to ensure EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE.
Let’s keep the momentum going.
